93.9 KPDQ has been on the air-waves for well over 60 years and has established themselves as a invaluable resource to the Christian community. However, despite decades of broadcasting, they had a rather cumbersome, unusable logo. Even Before I came to work for KPDQ, I had worked for an advertising company that handled KPDQ’s promotional materials. I remember having to find old film for screen-printing and tracking down each of the colors (all FIVE of them). There really wasn’t a good combination that simplified the logo to save on the number of colors used and it resulted in higher production costs.

Years later, when I started at the station, I found that it was rare that the full-color logo was used well besides the web and other digital files. Many times the logo was pulled a part to create a one-color version and resulted in various versions floating around the office. It was finally decided that an update was needed for consistency’s sake.

The Process

We knew that we didn’t want to depart too far from the original font so that any promotional material we currently had could still be used until we ran out. It was also necessary that the logo work well as a one-color and was far more simplified than what had been.

Two lockups were created — one vertical and one horizontal — so that it could adapt to any medium.

The Application

The logo since has been applied to everything imaginable; the website, hats, promotional material and even the station vehicle. It’s sure to carry the KPDQ name proudly for the decades to come.
